For most of us, technology is a matter of convenience. It makes many of life’s routine functions or demands easier or quicker to do. But for someone with a particular diagnosis or disability, the impact is often far greater: ASSISTIVE technology makes impossible things POSSIBLE.

That’s why the month of November has been designated Assistive Technology Awareness Month—to recognize and celebrate the many ways Assistive Technology (AT) positively impacts the lives of people with disabilities.

UCP’s AT staff work with purpose and passion to stay informed of the possibilities and potential new technologies can provide people with varying abilities. Time and again, the reality of greater independence fosters increased confidence… which ultimately can lead to improved outcomes in all areas of life.

UCP offers several avenues through which Pennsylvanians can secure assistive technology devices and/or equipment:

Changing Hands equipment exchange and reuse program gives new life to used equipment, creating meaningful moments for individuals. Changing Hands restores, refurbishes and recycles a wide array of devices and equipment that enhance overall independence at home, school, work, or in the community. The inventory comprises donations of everything from low-tech items such as sock aids, grabbers, canes, bedside commodes, and shower seats… to more sophisticated technologies such as communication systems, power wheelchairs and scooters, and specialized pediatric equipment. All of it is available FREE OF CHARGE. If and when the equipment no longer serves a purpose, the user can donate it back… to be restored and recycled again.

Independent Living Technology (ILT) is an innovative model of support that uses remote monitoring technology to increase the independence and safety of older adults and people with disabilities. The use of this technology has the potential benefit of cost savings from reduced staffing. It also gives individuals the opportunity to live in a less restrictive residential option, such as an apartment, rather than a group home.

Our two Lending Libraries let you TRY BEFORE YOU BUY. When it comes to AT equipment, the opportunity to trial equipment and technology in advance of purchasing something can be a game changer. Fortunately, that’s the concept behind two lending libraries that UCP operates.
