Free Special Phone Program Puts the “Assist” in Assistive Technology
Do you miss phone calls because you can’t hear the ringer? Or don’t make calls because you can’t see the numbers to dial? Do you have difficulty hearing what others say on the phone? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should check out Pennsylvania’s Free Special Phone Program (also known as Telecommunication Device Distribution Program or TDDP).
If you are an eligible Pennsylvania resident with a disability that impedes independent access to your use of the phone, you may qualify to receive specialized equipment FREE OF CHARGE. Eligibility requirements include:
- Be a Pennsylvania resident with a disability or disabilities that prevent you from making and/or receiving phone calls independently
- Be at least six years of age or older
- Have individual gross income of 200% of the federal poverty level or less (low income)
- Have current landline telephone service
- Have the ability to learn how to use the requested devices(s)
- Must certify to get a wireless service agreement to use with a wireless device
In addition to landline phones, TDDP now offers wireless phones, iPads and tablets to those who meet the stated eligibility requirements.
TDDP is just one of the life-changing programs offered through UCP’s Assistive Technology services. UCP administers the TDDP program contract in select PA counties, including: Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Mifflin, Perry, and York. The program was created through PA ACT 34-1995 and is implemented by TechOWL.
